Narrative: Because of a need by teachers to be a part of the local partnership the Tri-County partnership began to host fall conferences in 1998. The first conference had the outcome of making educators and employers aware of Education Edge. As the partnership developed, a mechanism for identifying a contact person at each school became readily apparent. By identifying a lead teacher at each of the schools, communication was enhanced and a work team was created to identify professional development needs. By 1999, it was clear that the guidance counselors in the schools needed to be informed about two academies, the FAMS and Hospitality and Tourism. The 1999 Fall Conference focused on familiarizing counselors with the academies and the employers who were potential employers of students completing the programs. In 2000, it was determined that sharing the many successes of various initiatives throughout the partnership would be the focus of the 1999 conference.
It Works! Not only did the conferences provide a system of organizing educators and employers to identify professional development needs, it has been an effective way of communicating requirements of various academic programs. After the second conference in 1999, guidance counselors were much more effective in identifying students to register for the academy programs, and enrollment in the academies increased significantly.
