Narrative: After researching other states' programs, this project was developed addressing the 12 competencies in the elementary portion of the National Career Development Guidelines. With a target audience of K-3, students' workbooks, a Teacher's Program Guide, a video, classroom lesson plans, career centers and other information in the form of posters, cards, etc. were created around a central character, a hound dog named Smokey, who would befriend and guide students in their search for a career. All of the animals and places used in the workbook and video are found in Tennessee and students from several of the schools are featured in the video. Smokey not only appears in the video, but also has been seen at school events, and may eventually appear in community parades and host career days.
It Works! Evaluations by the teachers after their use of the material in the classrooms have been very positive. The program can be easily adapted to stand-alone use or integrated within the existing curriculum, and provides material and hands-on activities for the students, as well as lesson plans and centers ready for use in the classroom for the teachers. Two more school systems have purchased student workbooks and one school system has had all their elementary teachers take training in the program.
