Narrative: "Getting Yourself Together" is an original design of the teachers and principal of Spring Hill High School. It is a career awareness program for grades 9-12 with a particular emphasis for freshmen and seniors. Components include: career portfolios; computerized interest and ability assessments; nine-week freshman class focusing on teamwork and career research; career lab including Internet; a required "Introduction to Business" class; a marketing class that operates a T-shirt business; and a required class for seniors which covers written communication, listening skills, financial planning and job application. All components are on-campus.
In addition to the equivalent of three full-time teaching positions, local business and Junior Achievement personnel assist with the program. It can be replicated with minimal resources.
It Works! In the first seven months of this program, the following outcomes are noted:
· All ninth graders have a career portfolio and have completed career research.
· 95 percent of all students have been through the career lab.
· All seniors have completed the resume/interview unit.
· Career portfolios are coordinated to Education Edge career clusters.Contact:
