Narrative: Sequoyah High School in Madisonville and TRW Koyo, Steering System (TKS) developed a program in 1997 designed to:
Twenty participants are selected their freshman year to participate over a four year period until graduation. The program allows students to review their high school course curriculum to match their career goals. The students spend one hour per month until graduation.
- expose students to the manufacturing technologies and careers at TKS;
- develop a relationship between students and TKS;
- provide a pool of candidates for the co-op program;
- provide a pool for full-time employment; and
- practice job search skills.
A grade point average of 2.0 or better is required and good attendance at school is mandatory. Students must indicate an interest in a career at TKS and this includes engineering, accounting, information systems, nursing, maintenance, production and supervision/management.
It Works! TKS provides six co-op jobs for students each year. They provide field trips to students to TKS and postsecondary institutions in the region. Students have instruction in quality processes and a large emphasis in teaming skills. Using the Zenger Miller Working Training Program students receive instruction in listening, problem solving, teaming techniques and communication. Employees at TKS provide detailed information on the various careers represented at the company. The program is a win-win for the community: TKS has employed six graduates of the program and students have the opportunity to learn valuable skills prior to high school graduation.
