Teacher Summer Institute

Narrative:  With funding from Bellsouth, the Teacher-In-Industry Summer Institute began in 1997 with twelve teachers visiting manufacturing organizations. In 1999, one hundred and thirteen teachers (secondary and postsecondary) participated in this 18-day institute and over thirty-eight employers representing multiple career clusters participated. Teachers received a stipend while participating. The Institute included five days of professional development, two days of project development, eight days at the worksite, one technology conference, one day hosted by Federal Express and one awards day. Teachers produced curriculum that will be integrated into their fall classroom curriculum.

It Works!  The Southwest Partnership assumed funding for this project after overwhelming success of the first years of implementation. The Institute provides a systematic method for meeting the academic and technical skill needs as identified by business. The Institute serves as a forum for knowledge exchange between businesses, secondary and postsecondary faculty and provides an opportunity for increased teamwork across these systems.
