Narrative: Since June of 1997, Hamblen County Schools has provided its teachers with the opportunity to complete an externship with local business and industry each summer. The opportunity is open to teachers in all grade levels. Originally a 5-day experience, the externship has expanded to two weeks. The summer 1999 project included a half-day workshop on SCANS, labor market trends, an employer panel, Work Keys and general information about Education Edge. The teachers are paid and are exposed to all aspects of the industry, with particular emphasis on the new technology and SCANS skills required.
It Works! The project has a three-year track record. A total of 65 teachers have participated. Teachers are readjusting their curriculum to incorporate what they learned during their externships. Each teacher completes a written report describing the experience. They also complete evaluations. Some comments:
"I feel that all teachers should be able to do an externship."
"I feel this is a great program and I am going to try to apply what I learned in my classroom."
"Using the information from my experience will enable me to be a better classroom teacher."
"I would highly recommend the program to be continued."
"I have gained a more realistic expectation of what my students need to succeed."
