Three Oaks Middle School Sweet Shop

Narrative: The Three Oaks Middle School Sweet Shop in the Dyersburg/Dyer Partnership provides students enrolled in the Teen Learning Class with career education and work-based learning activities.

Bakery goods are sold to teachers, the student body, and at home ballgames. Cookie and candy trays are provided to local industries upon request, and all desserts for school banquets. Specialty foods are prepared for holidays and for foreign language and social studies classes. During the nine-week course, students also complete evaluations of themselves, their peers, the teacher, and the program.

It Works! Approximately 200 students participate in the program each year and learn about the business, math, communication, and entrepreneurial skills necessary to operate a bakery. Students formally apply for bakery positions and submit written applications with references before taking part in a job interview. Students in other classes provide a variety of services under contract: students in science class act as health inspectors, math students serve as the accounting firm, and language arts and art classes produce advertising. The enterprise is about to begin its third year and is virtually self-sustaining.
