School-to-Career Class

Narrative:  Shelley Rose, 8th grade teacher at Coopertown School, began offering the School-to-Career Class in 1998. The class involves all eighth grade students (including Comprehensive Development Class) and meets every other day for ninety minutes for one year. Students have opportunities to have Employer Career Cluster panels; explore classified ads for job related skills and requirements; research careers using the Internet; tour various employers; see their parents involved as they explore careers (Take Your Child To Work Day); use career resources in the classroom; and take various interest and aptitude inventories.

It Works!  This is now a required course. The first year participants have commented how this class assisted them as they designed their four-year plan. Students are exposed to careers they never had experience with in the past. One student commented: "this career class is like a road and it can connect you to any career you want. If you take this road (School-to-Career Class) it will be the beginning of a great journey."
