Narrative: The Blount/Knox School to Career Partnership provided funds for the Science Education Outreach Partnership. This project's unique approach to science education outreach at the postsecondary level involves the college students in the planning and implementation of hands-on classroom activities in elementary schools. The program, started in 1998 in 3 elementary schools, involves faculty and students from Pellissippi State working with classroom teachers to select hands-on activities and to work directly with the students in the classroom. Many of the college students received training from the American Museum of Science and Energy in Oak Ridge as well as from the faculty at Pellissippi State. All supplies and materials are provided by the college, and in some cases, curriculum kits are provided for teachers to share with other classroom teachers.
It Works! Very positive feedback has been received from teachers, school administrators and the elementary students. The project helps:
· Elementary teachers feel more comfortable with teaching science by "doing" science.
· Elementary students discover that science can be hands-on and fun. · College students both experience the joy of helping others discover science and learn what a career in elementary science education entails.Contact:
