Narrative: Resources for Achieving Career Education for Success (RACE for Success) is Bradley County's comprehensive effort to provide classroom and work-based learning experiences for students with disabilities. The program begins in the 7th grade and continues through high school. The program enhances full inclusion combining classroom learning and vocational training. Employers who participate in the program discover that people with handicaps can be great employees, employees learn to overcome some of their preconceptions about the disabled, and staff report that students are more enthusiastic about school.
It Works! Over 180 business partners have participated. More than 250 students now have a clearer understanding of the connection between classroom lessons and work skills. When students complete the program, they have a career portfolio, a job resume and real work skills. Teachers, administrators, parents and employers are expanding the program to serve even more students and the school district is adding new staff.
