Midnight Madness

Narrative:  The Title 1 coordinator at Rogersville Middle School served on a community-wide committee to design a program that would engage parents in their children's education as well as involve employers in the school. The result is a fun-packed five hours held on a Friday evening called Midnight Madness. This program began with 90 participants and focused on reading skills. Parents and students work and learn together in teams facilitated by community volunteers and 4-H Honor club students. The second year had 120 participants and focused on math skills. In the third year, all areas of the curriculum were included with emphasis on creative and critical thinking, problem solving, cooperative learning and communication. Participants totaled 130. The project is funded with Title 1 funds and was originally limited to Title 1 eligible students. During the 1999-2000 school year, all students will be invited to participate. The planners are adding a mentor and peer tutor element to the project.

It Works!  Business and community members have asked to be involved. Parental involvement has increased and parent surveys indicate they are more comfortable with the school environment, visit more often and volunteer to serve on school committees. The students ask to participate. Enrollment has increased each year. The project has expanded from only Title 1 students to a school wide project.
