Narrative: In 1997 the Whiteville Elementary School in Hardeman County launched its mentoring program, HOSTS, for thirty-five (35) middle school students. Employees from six area businesses provide one-on-one language arts-focused mentoring to students who are no more than two years below reading level. HOSTS is a national initiative, which is also operated in Memphis.
In addition to working on reading skills, mentors help build self-esteem and improve academics for their students. Language arts, vocabulary and critical thinking skills are also emphasized.
It Works! At the end of the first year, students showed an average gain of 1.5 grade levels in reading. Teachers report that these students also demonstrate an improved attitude toward school. They are more confident in their reading ability. The Whiteville HOSTS program received Exemplary Status from the HOST Corporation, a designation rarely received in the first year.
