Math Olympics

Narrative:  Four counties partnered to develop an initiative to improve math scores, which they considered to be a common weakness. The goal was to include all students in grades 3-8 in a Math Olympics. Identical qualifying and final tests were administered in all four counties, but the tests were administered to two divisions of students - Division I included all regular academic students and Division II included all students with an identified learning disability. Speed and accuracy were both factors and the student who finished first with the most correct answers won the competition. Initially, Math Olympics were held only countywide and a winner was identified in each county. In year three, a partnership competition was held across all four counties for the regular academic students in grades 7-8. The partnership competition will be expanded to include more students in year four.

It Works!  There has been an increased level of interest and pride in the competition among students and school personnel. Parents have also expressed appreciation of there being an academic competition in addition to athletic competitions. The newspaper has provided excellent coverage of the event.
