Narrative: The Maury County Partnership sponsored the Middle School Math Teacher Institute in 1999. During the 3-day Institute, teachers had an opportunity to interact with various employers who toured the educators in their facilities and explained their workforce needs and shared examples of mathematics in the workplace. The purpose of the Institute was to expand awareness of careers in mathematics and to enhance relevancy of teaching techniques for middle school math teachers. In 2000, the Institute expanded to include high school teachers and information on Gateway examinations. The Institute will include elementary teachers in 2001.
It Works! Revisions in math standards have stimulated interest by math teachers to include methodologies that include real world applications of math. The computer training teachers received has provided them fresh methods of teaching mathematics. The school system has included this project in its funding. The system also plans to use National Science Foundation funding to expand the program.
