Manufacturing Means Jobs

Narrative:  Haywood County Schools began a Ford Academy of Manufacturing Sciences (FAMS) replication during the 1997-98 school year. Manufacturing Means Jobs (MMJ) provides juniors and seniors with the opportunity to take two courses each school year and to participate in a summer internship during the summer between their junior and senior years. Sixteen students participated in the initial year; fourteen completed internships. Fourteen seniors participated during the second year and fourteen juniors were also enrolled. During the first year six local businesses participated in the program, in 2000 more than thirteen are involved.

All interns complete a report on their projects and make a PowerPoint presentation at the annual banquet. They also make public presentations about the MMJ program to students and community groups throughout the school year.

It Works!  Of the twelve that completed the program all enrolled at postsecondary schools and one entered the military. Approximately 50% of the students are employed on a part-time basis by internship sponsors during the school year. Many continue their employment into the summer following graduation. After completing coursework at Jackson State Community College, one of the interns has been hired by their sponsoring company.
