Narrative: The Leadership Education program is a monthly professional development series provided by the Blount/Knox Partnership to 36 local educators each year. Modeled after Leadership Knoxville it features tours of business and industry as well as other valuable career information specifically designed for educators. The program specifically targets the up and coming leaders in the education community and over the past 15 years, more than 500 have completed the program. A tuition of $100 is paid by the participant with the remainder of approximately $12,000 being donated from the business community over and above their Chamber membership dues. An Alumni Association now encourages graduates to work on service learning projects like Habitat for Humanity. Last year's project was "The House that Teachers Built". Monies were raised from the district and alumni members. This year's alumni project is a mini-grant program offering reimbursement for tuition, travel expenses, etc. for graduates who wish to attend professional development sessions that the district is unable to provide in its budget.
It Works! The business community has not only supported the monthly series of meeting, but through the Alumni Association has extended its support through the alumni projects. Last year's Alumni project succeeded in increasing the Alumni Association's membership from less than 30 to over 150.
