Narrative: In 1997, Henry County High School required student members of the Effort Scholars to participate in a community service project. As a result of this emphasis, the entire school has developed a culture centered around community service and has expanded to include service learning. What began as students participating in the Special Olympics as assistants or the cheering section has been expanded to service learning in a variety of initiatives. The first service-learning project was Meals on Wheels. The Family and Consumer Science classes now prepare desserts for the Drivers Education classes to deliver to local Meals on Wheels agency. Project Echo, an environmental project involving TVA, Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency, Game and Fish Commission, the National Forest Service, and Henry County High School was created to reclaim part of the shoreline on Kentucky Lake. The project includes water sampling and water quality experiments. The Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency provides all of the funding for Project Echo.
It Works! In 2001, Henry County High School was selected as a National Leader School, one of only sixty-four schools throughout the nation and the only one in Tennessee. Students participating in journalism classes not only prepare the student newspaper, but also go the newspaper office to observe the publishing process and stuff the school paper into the local newspaper for community-wide distribution. The school now gets calls from the community informing them of projects they would like to partner with the school in completing.
