Joint Enrollment Program

Narrative:  The Joint Enrollment Program was developed and launched by the Hancock County Education Edge Department during the 1998-99 academic year. Outstanding seniors were enrolled in English IV with the opportunity to earn nine semester hours of credit from Walters State Community College. Upon completion of their senior year, they not only received high school credit for English IV, they also had advanced credit at the Community College for two semesters of English composition and a semester of literature. This program represents true articulation between the high school and the college in that the college credit required neither additional exams nor payment for the course. The success of this program is due in large part to the challenging curriculum and the skill of the teacher. Students were not only expected to achieve at higher levels, they had the added incentive of entering college with advanced credit.

It Works!  All nineteen (19) students who enrolled in the course completed it successfully. Due to its success, staff is making plans to add new dual-enrollment courses. Computer Science is slated next. The course provided the needed impetus for enrollment in college for at least one-third of the class. In meeting with the class, the reviewer was impressed with how enthusiastic and articulate the members were. Some of their comments:

"(Course) ensured me that I could do it." (go to college)
"Helped my study habits."
"I feel more comfortable about college."
"My public speaking skills improved."
"I developed as a person."
"We had lots of ownership and freedom in class."
"I learned how to study."
"This course should be offered in every high school."
