Narrative: The Jackson/Madison County Partnership produced K-12 work readiness standards, which are now being implemented throughout Madison County. In the fall of 1995, a team of eighteen educators, parents, students and business people developed the standards. A cadre of grades 6-12 teachers was trained to integrate the standards into the curriculum and they trained all other teachers through a train-the-trainer approach. Pre-K through grade 5 teachers will be trained during the 1998-99 academic year. The primary workplace standards include communication skills; data analysis techniques; problem solving; collaborative teamwork; identification of career goals; and an understanding of how social, organizational and technological systems function. The County plans to sustain the effort.
It Works! Teachers are more receptive to a work readiness curriculum. The results of a recent Gallup School-to-Work Index (conducted by Greater West Tennessee Tech-Prep Consortium) showed that Madison County schools exceeded the national norms in almost all areas.
