My First Career Fair

Narrative:  "My First Career Fair" is a middle school initiative designed by the guidance counselor at H.Y. Livesay Middle School in Tazewell. It is unique in that middle school students have an opportunity to begin to explore careers while learning about the possible "first jobs" they might secure. A total of 450 fifth through eighth grade students attended the fair.

Twenty-five local businesses set up booths and spoke to students about positions in their companies such as babysitting, fast food cook, lawn care, grocery store baggers, etc. It was a show-and-tell style fair. Participating businesses also provided information on how to dress, the importance of commitment to a job, how to complete applications and how to manage money earned on a job. The fair has already been offered twice at H.Y. Livesay Middle School and plans are underway to replicate the fair at other middle schools in Claiborne County.

It Works!  Students demonstrated the competencies learned at the career fair by completing an informational interview with someone in a career field of their interest. Feedback from the business sector was positive and they are committed to assisting in an ongoing way.
