Narrative: During the spring semester 2000, the fourth grade students and teachers at Lewis County Middle School established the Cookie Factory. All 162 students in the 4th grade participated in the project. Seven teachers served as team leaders. The students completed a comprehensive job application, were interviewed and were assigned one of ten different types of positions in the company. Four teams were developed: Research, consisting of survey designers, survey distributors/collectors, and survey interpreters; Advertising, consisting of artists and advertising agents; Manufacturing, consisting of product distributors, production Engineers and product manufacturers; and Sales, consisting of sales representatives and accountants. The goals were to show students how academics actually play an important role in the day-to-day work environment (communication, math, science and technology), how working well together really impacts success, and the different aspects of a company/corporation and how important each one is to the whole.
It Works! The "Cookie Factory" was not only a great learning experience for students and teachers but made for "a very fun and interesting week of school." Parent and teacher response was very positive. The students want more projects like this in the future, and asked to be included when next year's fourth graders do the project. Profits from the activity were used to throw a party at the end of the year, as well as to purchase a digital camera that each class can use throughout the year.
