Narrative: The Construction Technology Program at Tennessee High School in Bristol, TN is sponsored by the business partnership of the high school, the Associated General Contractors of the Tri-Cities and East Tennessee State University (ETSU). The goal of the program is "to prepare young people to enter the workforce of commercial construction as a Carpenter Level II or to enter a four-year university and pursue a construction management degree."
The program begins in the freshman year with job shadowing and career exploration. Classes begin in the sophomore year and paid internships are available in the summers between the junior and senior years. This project is endorsed by the Department of Labor, has the commitment of nine area contractors to hire its graduates, and provides a nationally accepted certificate of achievement in this field.
It Works! This project is an excellent example of true collaboration among secondary education, postsecondary education and the private sector. Students have the choice of working full-time after high school graduation or continuing their education at ETSU. AGC members are committed to the project. Additional high schools in the area have indicated interest in joining the collaboration. It will likely be replicated.
