Narrative: In an effort to assist 9th grade students in selection of career pathways, Rutherford County devoted 2 ½ years to developing a multi-pathed system of course planning. The Career Clusters and Majors publication clusters "groups of related occupations with options for majors. Clusters guide students' preparation academically and vocationally for postsecondary education and the workplace." The publication and system of classifying academic preparation assists students who are following a university, technical or dual path.
It Works! The publication has been placed in the hands of the 2000 freshmen in the seven high schools in Rutherford County. The goal is to have all incoming freshmen select a cluster for focused student. The publication was given to each parent and freshman during orientation. A video and PowerPoint presentation was shown that explained requirements for graduation and Gateway assessments. The parents appreciated the detailed information they received that now answers the question: What does it take to graduate?
