Narrative: Students always ask, "How am I ever going to use this?" To assist with answering this question a language arts teacher, Richard Bolkcom, began to integrate career exploration activities into this classroom. Using a career research paper as a culminating activity, students began to use new career resources to look at careers in which they had an interest. Through informational interviews, they leaned first-hand about careers in various fields. They had an opportunity to "dress" like the profession they were studying (i.e. dress in an EMT uniform, etc.) when they presented an oral report on their topic. They learned how to write thank you notes to members of the community that they had interviewed.
It Works! This activity began with 120 students. Now over half of the school is participating in integration of career development into the classroom. Accelerated Reading and CDC classes are now tied in to these career activities.
