Narrative: Brighton Preschool is an all-inclusive program in which the disabled preschooler is educated with the non-disabled. The preschool is based on the campus of a high school facility and provides an opportunity for high school students to be involved. The preschool serves seventy-seven (77) students in two classes. There is one class in the morning and one in the afternoon. It operates throughout the school year. The Brighton Preschool program is an all-inclusive program. Preschool children are placed in the program according to eligibility criteria established by the State Department. The children that are selected to participate in the program are mainstreamed with other children to make a class of children with varying abilities. Since the program is housed in a high school, it provides the high school students the opportunity to be involved in "on the job" training. If the high school students are considering a career in the childcare field, they are linked with employers in the community. Students are trained in specific skills and techniques by the classroom teacher. Baseball players at the school can read to the preschool children one afternoon a week. This provides an opportunity for the high school student to be a role model or "hero" figure for the preschoolers. This can also be helpful to the high school student by providing a sense of self-confidence and increasing self-esteem.
It Works! Preschool children obtained goals and objectives when tested, using the Kindergarten Brigance Assessment. High school students received on the job training, were provided an opportunity to make career choices, and acted as role models.
