Bridges Program

Narrative:  In 1993 Vicky Waller created a Bridges planning workbook which outlines for students the courses they need to take during each year of high school in order to pursue a certain career goal, including recommended electives. Eighth graders and their parents are given the workbooks at an open house in the spring before their freshman year. Later they discuss options with the school counselors regarding careers and courses recommended that would assist students in preparing for that career and postsecondary training/education.

It Works!  Twelve hundred Bridges planning workbooks are produced each year for entering freshmen. When upper-class students are ready to register for classes, they meet with school counselors, review their educational plan, and have parents sign off on their choices of classes. The school has 80% attendance by parents when they have their parent meeting to discuss the upcoming school registration period.
