Break Sessions

Narrative:  The Ft. Craig Elementary School in Maryville is a year-round magnet school. Under the dynamic leadership of its principal, Larry Holt, Ft. Craig offers a child-centered program with curriculum developed around established lifelong guidelines and life skills. One of the school's most innovative programs is "Break Sessions." Whenever there is a vacation from the classroom (breaks due to the year-round school calendar), students may select a special course to attend. The list of choices is endless but they all provide an opportunity to experience a different career. Some examples include an archaeological dig, spending time in a courtroom, designing and running a small business, sculpturing with clay and rehearsing plays. Courses are offered for all age groupings. Professionals in the private and public sectors with expertise in the various areas teach them.

It Works!  Students are challenged during their vacations with these informal, fun-learning experiences. They are spaced throughout the year affording parents an opportunity to take an active role in the school. Students are getting a "jump start" on awareness of different careers. The hands-on activities create a high interest in school and reinforce basic skills.
