Narrative: Booking It Around Town was created by Michelle Brewer to provide her 4th grade class with an opportunity to visit local business and share their favorite book with an employer. The program has a reading emphasis where employers and students spend about 30 minutes reading to each other. After students share their favorite portions of their books, employers talk to the students about how reading is an important part of their daily lives and share examples of the types of material they read in a typical day. Parents are invited to participate in this daylong event. After the Book It Around Town day, students participate in monthly activities that include service projects reading to the elderly and assisting the Salvation Army establish a library.
It Works! The program has developed a strong support network of local business and governmental leaders. The mayor, city and county employees, Knox County Schools Central Office staff, Knoxville Utility Board, TVA and Southdown - Knoxville Cement Plant are just a few of the agencies and businesses that support this program. Letters from employers indicate their enjoyment in participating in this initiative and appreciate efforts to show the connection between reading and success on the job.
