Building Trades

Narrative:  Sullivan East High School forged a unique partnership with 14-18 area businesses that resulted in a school-based enterprise for their Construction Technology Class. Using materials donated by the businesses, the class makes birdhouses, doghouses, tables and computer stands. Students are exposed to several trades including carpentry, roofing, truss building, vinyl siding and framing. They learn to use a drill press, horizontal boring machine and a DeWalt Miter Box Saw. Over 2700 birdhouses have been made and sold. The proceeds are reinvested into the program. Students from the CDC and special education classes are involved in the class with assembly and painting of the finished product. This provides their classes with funds for their Special Olympics.

It Works!  The program is in its third year and has grown from a few business partners to nearly 20. Students receive hands-on work experience at school. The business partners hire many of the students after graduation. More funds are generated each year to help more students.
