Big Boll Feed Store

Narrative:  Munford High School began looking for a fundraising project for the local chapter of the FFA that would provide operating funds for the chapter and provide a service to the community. They surveyed parents to determine if they would support a Feed Store at the school. A primarily agricultural community, Munford did not have a feed store and students and parents would have to travel 20 miles to the closest COOP to buy feed for the animals they were raising as part of the FFA activities. They partnered with Nutrena Feeds and working with the students, agriculture teachers Glenn Goulder and Ann Johnson opened the Big Boll Feed Store in February of 1999. This was the first national joint venture between Nutrena Feeds and a high school. Students applied and interviewed for the 16, non-paid positions and worked one afternoon a month and one Saturday a semester. Students who participated were exempt from study hall. A total of five agriculture teachers work one Saturday every five weeks.

It Works!  The Big Boll Feed Store had overwhelming success in the first season it was opened. It is self-sustaining and students, who operate the store, are learning customer relations skills, how to recommend products to customers, inventory control and budget management.
