Narrative: In 1994, as a result of a declining workforce to supply the aviation industry and the closing of a military airbase, Wooddale High School and members of the aviation community began planning a program of study, which would establish an integrated curriculum with an emphasis in aviation/travel and tourism. A three-year grant was received by NASA, which provided the start-up funds for this program of study, which is now supported in the Memphis City School budget. English, math and science are taught in collaboration with the aviation and travel courses. In the summer prior to high school, two one-week summer courses are available to incoming freshmen to provide them with an orientation to careers in the industry. The one hundred and fifty five (155) students in the program of study (45% female) are provided with daily opportunities to use technology to support hands-on learning activities. Students also take field trips and rides on airplanes (partners provide these learning activities).
It Works! Students completing the Wooddale Aviation program can articulate up to six months of coursework to the Tennessee Technology Center in Memphis by successfully passing appropriate exams. This can assist them in completing a program in Airframe and Powertrain.
