Approved Employer Program

Narrative:  The Approved Employer program is an employer-driven initiative that was developed by a 30-member task force of employers and educators to improve performance by students. Employers who participate must commit to the following activities:

  1. "Review school records as a part of the hiring and job-review procedure, including current high school transcript and/or latest report card with course work and attendance records.
  2. Adhere strictly to child labor laws and to the Nashville curfew laws, and design work schedules to complement the student's education not conflict with it.
  3. Participate in the implementation of a "Student Employee Institute" and encourage student employees to attend institute sessions.
  4. Provide feedback on strength and deficits in student skills and attitudes to the Education Division of the Nashville Chamber and/or the student's school contact, as requested.

It Works!  There are presently 28 Approved Employers (http://nashville.citysearch.com/E/FNASTN/000/15/77/4.2.html). These employers were able to provide internships for all students who requested them (34 internships during the summer of 1999). Twenty-three of these students attended the one-day summer institute. Students participated in workshops delivered by employers on the following topics: workplace communications, professional presence and ethics, and teamwork. Students who participated in the internships and institute were presented certificates during a special program at their school. This experience will become a part of their portfolio and/or resume.
