Narrative: The Approved Employer program is an employer-driven initiative that was developed by a 30-member task force of employers and educators to improve performance by students. Employers who participate must commit to the following activities:
- "Review school records as a part of the hiring and job-review procedure, including current high school transcript and/or latest report card with course work and attendance records.
- Adhere strictly to child labor laws and to the Nashville curfew laws, and design work schedules to complement the student's education not conflict with it.
- Participate in the implementation of a "Student Employee Institute" and encourage student employees to attend institute sessions.
- Provide feedback on strength and deficits in student skills and attitudes to the Education Division of the Nashville Chamber and/or the student's school contact, as requested.
It Works! There are presently 28 Approved Employers (http://nashville.citysearch.com/E/FNASTN/000/15/77/4.2.html). These employers were able to provide internships for all students who requested them (34 internships during the summer of 1999). Twenty-three of these students attended the one-day summer institute. Students participated in workshops delivered by employers on the following topics: workplace communications, professional presence and ethics, and teamwork. Students who participated in the internships and institute were presented certificates during a special program at their school. This experience will become a part of their portfolio and/or resume.
