Narrative: The Hawkins-Sullivan County Education Edge Partnership, in partnership with over fifty (50) businesses, operates the successful Appalachian Inter-Mountain (AIM) Scholars. The program began in 1994 and has grown to include ten high schools in a four-county area. This high school program begins with presentations to all 8th grade students to encourage their participation upon enrollment in the 9th grade. It is designed to encourage students to reach a high level of skill in several areas so they are prepared for work or higher education. AIM Scholars are required to complete a rigorous curriculum including 4 units of English (regular or above), 4 units of Math (Algebra 1 or above), 4 units of Science (excluding general science), 3 units of history/government/geography/economics), two credits of the same foreign language or two years in the same technical track, and 1 unit of computer literacy. In addition, students must maintain a "C" in all classes and have an attendance rate of 95% or greater. Students are recognized throughout their four years as an AIM Scholar and business partners visit the classrooms, provide incentives and encourage the hiring of its graduates for full-time or part-time work. AIM Scholars has a Board of Directors and an executive director. It Works! This program reaches over 15,000 students in Northeast Tennessee. In 1999, over 580 seniors graduated as AIM Scholars. This represents 33% of the graduating classes. A 40% rate is projected for 2000. Staff is currently completing an in-depth evaluation that will define what Scholars are doing since graduating high school. This should be ready by May 2000.
