Maury County Advisory/Advisee Program

Narrative:  The Advisory/Advisee program began in the spring of 1999 at Columbia Central High School. All 1,321 students were assigned a homeroom teacher that would remain their homeroom teacher throughout high school. With 95 faculty members, the student/teacher ration was approximately 1:15. Homeroom met every day for 30 minutes.

Homeroom teachers became a steady presence in each student's life and that teacher maintained the student portfolio. The portfolio included a graduation checklist, transcript, progress reports and report cards, student activities, community activities and school activities, and the student's work experience. By the time they finish high school they will be able complete a fairly comprehensive resume of their high school work.

It Works!  This program is intensively monitored by way of teacher and student surveys. Since the inception of the program, attendance has increased, all disciplinary actions are down, and student participation in activities is "astounding".
