Narrative: Metro Nashville Davidson County Schools, in partnership with forty (40) businesses, parents, Vanderbilt University, community and civic groups and local politicians, created the successful Academy of Business in 1996 at Glencliff High School. Approximately thirty-five (35) juniors and seniors take courses in accounting, office technology computer information systems and business. They also have paid work experiences during the summer and participate in job shadowing opportunities.
Teamwork, communication and problem solving skills are provided through the academy, preparing students for careers in business. Students develop leadership skills and their attendance at school shows improvement. This program is recognized statewide and staff have presented at the state and national Tech Prep conferences.
It Works! Only one student who participated in the Academy has dropped out of school. Some academy students have held office in Business Professionals of America. The program will be sustained by the local board of education and vocational education department. Feedback from businesses who hire the students as interns has been very positive. Students show an increase in their self-esteem upon completion of their internships.
