                                             Resource Parent Training

CPR & First Aid for Resource Parents

TCCW Course ID#: 2026

Description: This class will teach resource parents basic CPR and first aid skills that can sustain or save a life while professional emergency help is on the way. The goal of this training is to make the home environment safer by preventing illness and injury as well as quickly recognizing and responding to emergencies. Resource parents will not be certified in CPR or first aid, but will receive a certificate of participation.

Audience: This class is required for all resource parents and a condition of the approval process. Resource parents must receive this training every two years.

Length of Workshop: 4 hours

Medication Administration Resource Parent Training

Description: Medication Administration will provide Resource Parents the knowledge base to safely and effectively administer medications to children in care. Resource Parents will learn of the types of medications the children will likely receive and how to safely administer them. Participants will learn to recognize beneficial and adverse effects and whom to go to for information about medications. Major topics covered in this workshop range from safe storage, and disposal of medication to common errors in medication administration

Audience: This class is required for all resource parents in the first year following their PATH approval. Resource parents must receive this training every two years.

Working with Birth Parents Resource Parent Training

TCCW Course ID#: 2024

Description: Working with Birth Parents helps everyone involved with foster care gain an appreciation for the critical role of birth parents in the lives of children in care. Participants will have an opportunity to explore the impact that a child’s history and visits with his or her parents have on behaviors. This class gives participants an opportunity to discuss problems and solutions involved in working with birth parents, as well as strategies for successful partnerships

Audience: This class is required for all resource parents in the first year following their PATH approval. All resource parents must receive this training and are only required to attend once.

Cultural Awareness Resource Parent Training

TCCW Course ID#: 2020

Description: This Resource Parent course allows participants to examine their own cultural backgrounds and their beliefs about different cultures through self-assessment. The role that culture plays in a person’s development and sense of identity will be explored. Strategies related to gaining information and knowledge about different children’s cultural backgrounds will be discussed. Parent, child, and societal roles will be explored. Issues regarding communication and culturally—specifically training that will be offered in the field based on demographics and identified populations.

Audience: This class is required for all resource parents in the first year following their PATH approval. All resource parents must receive this training and are only required to attend once.

Parenting with Positive Discipline Part I Resource Parent Training

TCCW Course ID#: 2023

Description: Parenting with Positive Discipline revisits the department’s discipline policy and alternative ways of disciplining other than corporal punishment. Participants also gain an understanding of needs-based behaviors and learn that a behavior cannot be replaced without finding a more appropriate way for the child to get his/her needs met. Rewards, behavior modification, involving the child in behaviors replacement, and natural consequences are explored.

Audience: This class is required for all resource parents in the first year following their PATH approval. All resource parents must receive this training and are only required to attend once.

Parenting with Positive Discipline Part II Resource Parent Training

TCCW Course ID#: 4502

Description: This course revisits the department’s discipline policy and alternative ways of disciplining children other than corporal punishment. Discusses needs-based behaviors and helping child modify behavior appropriately to get his/her needs met.

Audience: This class is an elective. This class is also offered to resource parent trainers from private provider agencies and consortium universities.

Fostering Positive Behavior for Resource Parents Resource Parent Training

TCCW Course ID#: 2021

Description: This is an interactive DVD series which demonstrates best practice in behavioral problem-solving methods and highlights prohibited behavioral practices. This class reminds parents that children in state custody should not be subjected to restrictive and intrusive disciplinary measures. Participants will learn how to apply the overarching principles of Tennessee Department of Children’s Services work to specific issues of behavior management; how to approach the behavioral issues of children in state custody; and how to demonstrate effective behavioral problem-solving by thinking through the ABC’s of problem management.

Audience: This class will be required all Resource Parents. This class is also offered to resource parent trainers from private provider agencies and consortium universities.

Positive Parenting I Resource Parent Training

TCCW Course ID#: 4514

Description: This class will discuss cooperation, tracking behavior, and encouragement strategies to encourage positive parenting. Examples of each strategy are depicted in the scenarios that specifically illustrate how to employ each technique.

Audience: This class is an elective. This class is also offered to Resource Parent Trainers from Private Provider Agencies and Consortium Universities.

Positive Parenting II Resource Parent Training

Description: The second in a series, this class covers Setting Limits and using Behavior Contracts. This class builds upon the techniques presented in Positive Parenting I to strengthen skills necessary to insure successful behavior change.

Audience: This class is an elective. This class is also offered to Resource Parent Trainers from Private Provider Agencies and Consortium Universities.

Positive Parenting III Resource Parent Training

TCCW Course ID#: 4516

Description: In the last of a three part series, the class covers strategies parents can use to handle situations that have turned out negatively. Time-out, Privilege Removal, and Extra Chores are discussed as positive strategies that can be used with fairness and respect.

Audience: This class is an elective. This class is also offered to Resource Parent Trainers from Private Provider Agencies and Consortium Universities.

ADHD/ADD/ODD Resource Parent Training

TCCW Course ID#: 4507

Description: The presenter will explore the symptoms associated with these childhood behavior disorders. He will provide insight into and steps for parenting these children. There will be additional suggestions and recommendations for parents on working with their child’s physician and school.

Parenting the Delinquent Youth Resource Parent Training

TCCW Course ID#: 2027

Description: This class allows resource parents to explore the benefits of fostering a delinquent youth. Participants will gain knowledge helpful in assisting a delinquent youth in addressing challenging behaviors, delinquent behaviors, adolescent development, and transitioning to home or independent living placement. This class also enables participants to explore the impact a child’s family history has—and visits with his or her parents have—on their behavior. Participants of this class will have an opportunity to discuss problems and solutions involved in working with birth parents, as well as strategies for successful partnerships.

Audience: This class is required for all resource parents fostering delinquent youth.

Length of Workshop: 9 hours

Anger Outbursts Resource Parent Training

TCCW Course ID#: 4508

Description: This course will cover 4 types of anger outbursts in children: temper tantrums, assaultive behavior toward other children, rage toward the mother and erratic or unpredictable anger. Participants will gain insight into possible reasons for the behavior, as well as practical and immediate steps to deal with the particular outburst. Also provided are the general signs for all foster or adoptive parents who are caring for a child with an anger problem.

Childhood Anxiety Disorders Resource Parent Training

TCCW Course ID#: 4509

Description: This class will cover several anxiety disorders that are commonly seen in children in care. Topics include physical and behavioral symptoms, the role of heredity and prior experiences, and treatment options. Participants will learn their role in managing care for these children and working with professionals.

Eating Disorders Resource Parent Training

Description: This class will focus on common eating disorders in foster and adoptive children: stealing and hoarding food, gorging, refusing to eat certain foods, and anorexia. Common causes for eating disorders and concrete steps a foster parent can take to promote positive food and eating habits are discussed.

Audience: This class is an elective. This class is also offered to Resource Parent Trainers from Private Provider Agencies and Consortium Universities.

Engaging and Parenting Teens Resource Parent Training

Description: Engaging and Parenting Teens will allow participants to learn the benefits of being a resource parent for teens. Participants will also become familiar with adolescent development in relation to behaviors, identity, peers, and family and the relationship between interdependence and positive youth development. The importance of youth learning independent living skills is explored and the role of the foster parent and DCS regarding independent living is discussed with participants.

Audience: This class is offered as an elective for all resource parents after their PATH approval.

Lying Resource Parent Training

TCCW Course ID#: 4513

Description: The class will examine the underlying motivations children may have for not telling the truth: to get out of trouble, boost self esteem or get attention, and to get others in trouble. The presenter also discusses the pathological lying and “good” and “bad” tattling. Participants will learn strategies for teaching children in their care to learn to tell the truth and develop emotional honesty.

Audience: This class is an elective. This class is also offered to Resource Parent Trainers from Private Provider Agencies and Consortium Universities.

Fire Setting Resource Parent Training

TCCW Course ID#: 4511

Description: This class will discuss four types of fire-setting behavior- “silent but deadly”, impulsive, disturbed, and accidental or curious are discussed. In addition to examining common causes for fire-setting participants will be made aware of the warning signs, evaluation, and help for children with this behavior. Fire safety education is also discussed.

Audience: This class is an elective. This class is also offered to Resource Parent Trainers from Private Provider Agencies and Consortium Universities.

Stealing Resource Parent Training

TCCW Course ID#: 4517

Description: Causes for stealing behavior and teaching positive replacement behaviors to children will be discussed in this class. Shoplifting, stealing based on envy or revenge, stealing from loved ones and kleptomania are discussed in the context of possible motivation for those behaviors. The presenter will also provide information on strategies for dealing with a child who steals and when to seek professional help.

Audience: This class is an elective. This class is also offered to Resource Parent Trainers from Private Provider Agencies and Consortium Universities.

Kinship Care Resource Parent Training

Description: This class will focus on some of the unique problems and stressors related to this type of care. Participants will be provided with the insights and steps on kinship parenting, and the general steps for parents to consider when parenting these special foster children.

Life Books Resource Parent Training

TCCW Course ID#: 4506

Description: This class will focus on issues that all children must face as they prepare for placement. The life book serves as a therapeutic tool that enables children to move on with their lives by facing their past and present events. Resource parents will learn the significance of maintaining life books for children in care. There will be an opportunity for resource parents to gain knowledge and understanding of the relevance of children preserving a connection to their past and present through the pages of a life book.

Audience: This class is an elective. This class is also offered to Resource Parent Trainers from Private Provider Agencies and Consortium Universities.

Parenting the Sexually Abused Child Resource Parent Training

TCCW Course ID#: 2022

Description: This class empowers participants to respond appropriately to the many behaviors and situations presented by the child survivor of sexual abuse. The training addresses issues of coping with and responding to disclosures, managing sexual acting-out behaviors, developing family rules that are relevant to the sexually abused child, understanding myths and realities of sexual abuse, realizing the important role of therapy, and understanding potential outcomes for children who have been victimized.

Partnership In Action Resource Parent Training

TCCW Course ID#: 4501

Description: This course is designed especially for DCS staff and rsource parents to participate in together. It allows participants to further examine the meaning of partnership and to recognize the importance of DCS staff, rsource parents, and birth parents working together for the same goal.

Professionalism and Ethics for Resource Parents

TCCW Course ID#: 4503

Description: Participants will be able to define professionalism and identify qualities expected of professionals. More importantly, participants will be able to recognize how resource parents are professional members of the team and become familiar with the Code of Ethics for resource parents.

Audience: This class is an elective. This class is also offered to resource parent trainers from private provider agencies and consortium universities.

Length of Workshop: 1.5 hours
