Information and Policies
The offices and instructional facilities are located in Cadek Hall, 725 Oak Street, on the UTC campus. In addition, the conservatory provides contracted group and individual instruction in selected preschool and elementary centers.
The mailing address for the Conservatory is:
Cadek Conservatory of Music, Dept 1201
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga
615 McCallie Ave.
Chattanooga, TN 37403-2598
Student parking between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m.weekdays is available in designated slots in the lot beside Cadek Hall. A parking permit (current bumper sticker) should be obtained from the Conservatory office and placed on the car's right rear bumper. These permits are only available for Cadek students. After 9:00 p.m. weekdays and on weekends free parking is permitted in all university lots.
The conservatory maintains an open admission policy in the area of private instruction. Semester end reports completed by the teacher twice a year indicate the student's progress for the period. These reports are sent to the student (or parent), and a copy is kept in the student's conservatory file.
Policies governing admission to theory classes, ensembles, etc., offered by the conservatory are indicated for each such activity in the following section.
A student studying at the conservatory pays a fee entitling him or her to participate in the total conservatory program. A "regularly enrolled student" is entitled to one lesson per week, as well as participation in theory classes and certain ensembles. "Part-time students," those who participate only in group activities, are charged according to the regular fee schedule for these courses. Charges for the academic year (August-June) are billed in two installments: in August for the Fall Term (18 lessons), and in January for the Spring Term (18 lessons). Charges for the Summer Term are billed in June, and vary depending on the number of lessons projected by the teacher. Only those students whose accounts have been cleared or who have been approved for an Alternate Payment Schedule through the office are permitted to attend lessons/ensembles/classes.
Faculty are notified when students have paid the appropriate fee. NO STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO ATTEND THE FIRST LESSON OF THE PARTICULAR PERIOD UNTIL THE TEACHER IS NOTIFIED THAT PAYMENT HAS BEEN MADE. Patrons may pay by check or cash; and they may also pay by MASTERCARD or VISA. Families with multiple enrollments (more than one child studying, or one child studying more than one thirty minute lesson per week) may request a revised payment schedule; these will be treated on an individual basis, as necessary, in an attempt to reduce the impact of large up-front payments.
Please note that this billing schedule does not apply to Kindermusik students, who pay for their classes before attending. Please see the Fees and Financial Aid page for details.
Missed Lesson Policy
When a teacher contracts with a student for a specific lesson time (including classes and ensembles), the student and the teacher are then committed to this time. If a teacher must cancel the lesson, the student will receive an additional lesson or will not be charged for the missed lesson, at the student's option. No credit will be given for lessons missed by the student. Rescheduling of lessons missed by the student will be left to the discretion of the instructor, but not required.
A student may withdraw from instruction by presenting a written statement to that effect at the conservatory office. If the student (or parent) initiates the withdrawal, a refund will be made as follows: through the third lesson, a full refund of collected fees for the remainder of the Term; and from the fourth through the sixth lesson, a refund of 50% of the Term fee. After the sixth lesson, no refund will be made unless the withdrawal is for significant reasons, such as moving from the area. If the teacher initiates the withdrawal, the situation will be evaluated by the Director to determine if a refund is warrented.
Inclement Weather Policy
The conservatory will maintain its normal operating schedule during inclement weather (including snow) unless a public notice is given that Hamilton County schools are closed or anticipate closing prior to the normal closing hour. When possible, such closing notices are given to appropriate news media early on days of inclement weather. Faculty who intend to teach during hours when the Conservatory is closed due to inclement weather are responsible for so informing their students. Unless makeup lessons are scheduled by the teacher, credits are given for absences on such days.
