GEAR UP stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs
It is funded by the U.S. Department of Education through Amendments to
Higher Education Act of 1965
Purpose: GEAR UP is a national demonstration project designed to enable more young Americans to stay in school, study hard and take the right courses to go to and succeed in college. It is aimed at increasing the achievement levels of low-income students through effective partnerships (for example: Dalton State College, Northwestern Technical College, Cleveland State Community College and UTC as well as community groups, businesses, and parent groups). Typical grants begin with 7th grade students and follow students through high school - 6 years of funding).
