Programs

The Department of History offers an undergraduate major leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Pre-Law History. The undergraduate minor in history closely parallels the major in terms of the kinds of course experiences offered. These programs seek to introduce the student to a wide range of courses in American, Western European, Asian, African, & Latin American history that will prepare graduates for life and work in a global economy. History faculty actively supervises individual undergraduate research projects that allow students to “do” history. They also participate in the University's honors program. Either the major or minor in history can readily be combined with other majors at UTC. Students studying to become history teachers at the high school level should contact the Teacher Preparation Academy which will help them obtain state teacher certification with a "bachelor of science in secondary education: history." The department works with the Academy to provide a program for future teachers that is similar to that of history majors.  We also support a minor in business administration.

Facilities

The department offices are located in Brock Hall in the center of the UTC campus.  The Lupton Library, which is adjacent to Brock Hall, houses important archival collections of historical interest, and makes available a wide array of research and inter-library loan services.

Study Opportunities

Internship opportunities are available for students through three institutions: the Chattanooga Regional History Museum, the Chattanooga African-American Museum, and the Kalmbach Memorial Library (National Model Railroad Association). These internships allow students to get hands-on experience in museum, library, research, and photo-cataloguing work. The department awards three scholarships to deserving students every year. There is an active history club which, with the department, organizes an annual series of programs for students. This usually includes a series of lectures by the faculty and a lecture by a noted scholar from another institution. The department also has a chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the International Honor Society in History.

History Activities

The History Club and the Phi Alpha Theta Chapter give students an opportunity to meet with other students and faculty. They sponsor lectures, debates and social events that enrich the classroom experience. Phi Alpha Theta, Lambda Pi Chapter, or the International History Honor Society recognizes history students with high grade point averages for their hard work and academic achievement.

Preparing for Jobs

Many graduates of the department continue their education in post-graduate or professional programs in the fields of law, history, divinity, international studies, and library science. There are employment opportunities for graduates on the federal and state levels of government. Students have pursued careers in fields as diverse as diplomatic service, military intelligence, journalism, park service, and teaching at all levels. The UTC Placement Office, Room 223, University Center, has an experienced staff that is anxious to help History BA's find positions. The Placement Office maintains current issues of a number employment journals and lists that indicate jobs nationally, regionally, and locally for graduates with Liberal Arts degrees, including the History BA. The Placement Office also helps students to prepare resumes and to train for successful interviews.
