
Fitness/Wellness Specialist Concentration
This concentration is being replaced by the Exercise Science Concentration. It will not be an option for any student who's initial date of enrollment at UTC was Fall 2006 or later.
This concentration is designed for anyone interested in professional preparation in exercise and wellness programming for community, corporate, and/or private fitness/wellness programs. The program of study is structured to serve as preparation for the American College of Sports Medicine's Health Fitness Instructor Certification Examination. Here is a list of some of our graduates who have gotten their ACSM Health/Fitness Certification. Additionally, for those students who wish to pursue further education, this concentration serves as good preparation for graduate school. If you are willing to take classes in the summer, this major can be completed in 3 years. This will allow you to obtain both a Bachelors Degree and a Masters Degree in 5 years.

Some of the course that make this degree special are:
EHLS 313 Exercise Leadership: - An introduction to the skills, methods and procedures utilized in exercise and fitness program design. Emphasis will be placed on exercise leadership skills, instructional techniques and oral communication.
EHLS 314 Interpretation of EKG I: An introduction to electrocardiography and the interpretation of normal and abnormal cardiac rhythms.
EHLS 317 Exercise Physiology: Intensive study of various physiologic processes related to exercise.
EHLS 318 Kinesiology: Study of human motion; analysis of human motion as affected by gross anatomy and principles of motor learning.
EHLS 428 Exercise Prescription in Health and Disease: This course presents a comprehensive overview of the physical, physiological, and metabolic responses of the human body to exercise testing and training in both health and disease; the processes involved in prescribing safe and effective therapeutic exercise for healthy individuals as well as for patients with heart and lung disease, diabetes, and obesity will be discussed.
EHLS 440 Advanced Exercise Physiology: This course details the function of organ systems emphasizing mechanisms of control and regulation during exercise.
EHLS 441 Exercise and the Older Adult: This course will examine the scientific evidence concerning the relationship between physical activity level and physical, mental, social, and psychological well being during aging.

Beginning in the Fall of 2004, all undergraduate degrees offered in the state were required to decrease to 120 hours. We have worked hard to meet these guidelines and maintain the quality of your eduaction.

Some of our graduates are employed at the American Heart Association, Memorial Center for Health, Tennnessee Valley Authority, UnumProvident. This is only a small listing of locations our graduates are working. Many of our graduates also pursue additional training in graduate schools. We have had graduates go to the University of South Carolina, Ball State University and the University of Memphis to mention a few.
