The History of Music Education in Australia site is under contruction by Dr. Robin S. Stevens, Associate Professor at Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia. This is already a valuable and interesting site. There is a summary of the history of music education in Australia, photographs, and an excellent bibliography.

The Music Educators National Conference (U.S.) has an online position paper that includes a statement about the need for research in the history of music education.

The history of education site was an award-winning electronic source in the Nethlerlands that is no longer available. It is suggested that  you search the following categories:  Google search for "history of education"   and  Google search for "history of childhood"

The History of American Education Web Project is maintained by Professor Robert N. Barger at Eastern Illinois University. It was designated as the "Internet Site of the Day" by the CHRONICLE OF HIGHER EDUCATION. The site has a summary of each era of U.S. education, essays on various topics in the history of education, and excellent displays of drawings and photographs.

The Educational Policy Analysis Archives is an online article service that has a search mode that will find the term "music" or "music education" in its rather short lists of articles. There is not much about history.

The Institute for Studies in American Music has an online newsletter and other possibly useful informaton. One gets the idea that ISAM is not in the music education world.

The Journal of Research in Music Education, is the leading journal of music education in the U.S. It often includes articles on the history of music education. It has an online electronic index.

The Journal of Historical Research in Music Education is the leading journal in the history of music education. The Journal accepts articles about music education history world-wide.

The British Journal of Music Education often has articles in the history of music education. The BJME is more international in scope than most U.S. journals.

The History of Education Quarterly is the primary U.S. journal devoted to the history of education. Articles devoted solely to music education have never appeared in this journal, but books on the history of music education are reviewed.

American Music is a quarterly journal published by the Society for American Music (formerly the Sonneck Society). AMERICAN MUSIC has published articles about the history of music education. American Music has an online index.

Philosophy of Music Education Review sometimes has articles related to the history of music education, especially Volume 6, No. 2 It has an online list of contents of past issues.  

Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education frequently reviews disserations in the history of music education or has articles relating to the history of music education. It has several important data bases, including a list of dissertations in progress which lists several dissertations related to the history of music education. There are also abstracts of its qualitative research conferences. Report No. 130 has several papers on the the history of music education as it relates to qualitative research.

Scholarly Organizations

The History Research Special Interest Group (HRSIG) is an organization of scholars who belong to the National Association of Music Education (NAME), a U.S. organization devoted to music teaching, learning, and advocacy. It is the largest organization in the world devoted to the history of music teaching and learning. The organization normally meets every other year in conjuction with NAME.

The History of Education Society is the primary U.S. organization devoted to the history of education. The History of Education Society site gives a list of officers, the purpose of the organization, and the winners of its annual awards in history. It is linked to a membership form.

The History of Education Society (Great Britain) is an organization of educational historians located in the United Kingdom. They The further the study of educational history trhough conferences and meetings and through the publication of their History of Education Society Bulletin.

Division F of the American Educational Research Association is a forum for historians of education. The 1999 meeting was held in Montreal and the Association has listed program topics and titles of presentations. History is only one division of the AERA. For the general site link, clink here.

(1) The Dallas Wind Symphony maintains an extensive site that includes many links to Sousa-related historical material.

(2) The Sousa Archives for Band Research  at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign was organized in 1994 with the transfer of the John Philip Sousa, Herbert L. Clarke, and related collections to the University of Illinois Library. The collections of John Philip Sousa (1854-1932),  Herbert L. Clarke (1867-1945), former directors of band at the University of Illinois Albert Austin Harding (1880-1958), Mark H. Hindsley (1905-1999), Harry Begian (b. 1921), and University of Illinois alumnus and Sousa Band member Richard E. Kent (1899-1996) comprise the principle components of the Sousa Archives. The documentary materials, housed at the Sousa Archives in the Harding Band Building, are held for research use by students, scholars, and performing musicians.

The Kodaly Music Education Institute of Australia, Inc. has a brief historical description of Kodaly and his work in music education.

The E. Azalia Hackley Collection of Negro Music, Dance and Drama was established in 1943 when original materials were presented to the Detroit Public Library by the Detroit Musicians Association to serve as the nucleus for a special black music collection. The first of its kind in the world, the Hackley Collection, named after a Detroit music educator and performer, quickly broadened its scope to include dance, drama and other forms of the performing arts. The collection contains materials relating to the history of music education in the African-American community.
