Prerequisites

If you do not have one of the following prerequisites see your instructor: (1) Math 106 with a grade of C or above, (2) Placement level 20, or (3) minimum ACT Math Score of 22. No credit allowed in Math 210 after any other statistics class. Transfer students must show me a transcript (paper or computer) or RAP sheet to establish prerequisites. Please note that Math 210 may not be used to satisfy the math component of the Category F General Education requirements.

Textbook

The text for our course is Elementary Statistics-A Step by Step Approach-A Brief Version-Fourth Edition, by Allan G. Bluman and we will cover most of the sections from Chapters P through 5.
Please look through the homework assignment to get a more precise idea of what we will be doing.

Homework

This course will be very easy if you choose to ignore the homework problems. You will very probably get an F, but you won't have to work very hard to get this F. Simply getting the solutions written onto a piece of paper is better than nothing, but is still not sufficient. When you reach the point were you can explain the solution to a particular problem to your boss, your calculus instructor, or another student: then you are actually doing your homework. Many of the problems will be fairly easy for you to work, but they are all very important.

Calculators

Calculators will be needed for exams in this course. Students will need a scientific calculator and the caculator is allowed to be a graphics calculator, but we won't use the graphics capabilities in this course.

Disabilities

Students with disabilities who require special accommodations or assistance for testing, note-taking, reading, etc., should speak with their professor as soon as possible. The office of Student Affairs (755-4534) is available to answer questions about their services as well.

Examples of disabilities are blindness/low vision, communication disorders, deafness/hearing impairments, emotional/psychological disabilities, learning disabilities, and other health impairments.

Attendance

"You are expected to be here for every class. Coming late and leaving early should be rare occurrences since it is impolite and distracting to the entire class. However, it is better to be tardy than not to come at all. If you are tardy, please enter as quietly as possible and sit near the entrance. If you have to leave early for any reason, please let me know ahead of time and sit near the exit."

Catalog Description

Introductory Statistics (3 hours credit)
An introductory course suitable for students in a variety of disciplines. This course will teach students to interpret, develop, and use statistical and probabilistic models of real world phenomena; develop the concepts of uncertainty, probability, and statistical significance; and will indicate how these concepts arose and how they aid our understanding of the universe. Students will learn how to solve practical problems using statistical vocabulary, notation, and appropriate technology.

UTC Honor Code

Cell phone (or any other electronic media devices) use during exams will be considered to be cheating. Your instructor has had to turn in a number of students to the honor court for cheating. This is usually devastating to the student. Please click on the following link to read about university policies with respect to cheating. http://www.utc.edu/Administration/StudentDevelopment/handbook/academics.pdf
