Urging
all of us to open our minds and hearts so
that we can know beyond the boundaries of what is acceptable, so that
we can
think and rethink, so that we can create new visions, I celebrate
teaching that
enables transgressions—a movement against and beyond boundaries. It is
that
movement which makes education the practice of freedom. bell hooks
(1994).
Like bell hooks, I too see teaching as an opportunity to empower students to broaden their cognitive surroundings, to step outside the proverbial box, to challenge traditional boundaries and therefore to arouse/kindle/stimulate new modes of thinking which may in turn generate new visions. This transformational learning requires students to make the familiar strange and to begin to question their personal world truths and how they became established. Once students recognize their own boundaries as being constructed, they may then challenge and perhaps move beyond them. This recognition and challenging of personal boundaries both empowers and transforms students.
