Join us in the summer of 2010! June 15 through July 7!

This summer you can have the experience of a lifetime. You have the opportunity to join a small group of U.S. students in exploring and documenting the rich history and culture of Scotland. You will spend three weeks traveling the country, visiting places at which events occurred that influenced the course of western civilization.

You'lll walk the streets of Edinburgh, following the steps and visiting the haunts of David Hume, Thomas Hobbs, Adam Smith, Francis Hutcheson, and Lord Kames. You will visit the home of John Knox, walk the cobblestones at the Tron, stand in the place where Thomas Aikenhead uttered the infamous words for which he was hanged, the last man to be hanged for blasphemy in the Scotland. You will explore the life and times of Robert Burns, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Sir Walter Scott. You'll see where J. K. Rowling wrote the first drafts of her Harry Potter series. You'll have the opportunity to visit the haunting battlefield of Culloden where Scots' history and perhaps the history of the world changed. You'll be able to look from the battlements of Stirling Castle to the battlefield etched in history by "The Braveheart," William Wallace. You will have the chance to visit Bannockburn and the imposing memorial to Robert the Bruce, King of the Scots. You will feel even now the ancient presence of his Scots warriors, victorious over the invading English.

You can buy a genuine kilt, listen to the pipes, and immerse yourself in the life of one of the most beautiful European capital cities—Edinburgh. We will explore the age of the Scottish Enlightenment, visit Old Town's haunted catacombs, and hone our social skills in the historic pubs of the Grassmarket.

This is a cross-disciplinary course designed for students with interests in either or both journalism and history.
