Course
Description
Presentation of programs of current environmental interest by
students,
faculty, and visiting speakers. Each student will be required to
present or
take part in discussion of a topic each week. Required during first
year in
graduate program.
Course
Objectives
There are four main course objectives:
1) provide
an introduction to the Environmental Science Masters Program, 2)
provide for
faculty and student dialogue, 3) provide for mastery of skills for
professional
presentations, and 4) gain knowledge about current environmental
topics.
Course Requirements
Graduate faculty have selected [TBA] as the general theme for this
semester. Students must select a published work relating to the
general
topic. The selected work may be a scientific paper, a law or
policy
article, or a government document. The student must give a formal
presentation presenting the work as though it were their own, and lead
a follow
up discussion on the work. The presentation should be about 15
minutes
long and the discussion about 15 minutes. Each presentation
should
follow the format of the original work. For example, presentation
of
scientific works would include Introduction, Materials and Methods,
Results,
Discussion, and Literature Cited, or some close variation. The
student
should hand out copies of the paper to the seminar participants the
week before
the presentation.
Assessment
70% of your
grade will be computed
from your seminar presentation. The grading will be based upon
three main
criteria:
1.
Structure of the presentation
2. Clarity of the
presentation
3. Command of the
Material
15% of your
grade will be
based on completion of thoughtful evaluations of other speakers, both
