Making a Standard Solution

Standard solutions are solutions of known concentrations. They are made in volumetric glassware and can be made from a solid or from another solution.

  1. From a solid - please watch the video on making a standard solution from a solid on the videos webpage.

First, weigh out the solid.

Next, dissolve the solid in a small amount of solvent.

Finally, fill the solvent to the line.

  1. From another solution - this can also be referred to as a dilution. A small volume of a solution of known concentration is is used to make a diluted solution. The new concentration can be calculated using the equation below.

    1. First, an exact volume of a solution of known concentration is pipetted into a clean volumetric flask.
    2. Second, the solution is diluted to the volumetric mark using distilled water.

For help with pipetting technique, please visit the video webpage.

Here is all the glassware needed for making a dilute solution.

First, pipet the desire volume from the concentrated solution.

Next, deliver the solution into the new volumetric flask.

Finally, fill the volumetric flask to the line with the solvent.
