LABORATORY GLASSWARE

It is important to know the names and uses of all laboratory glassware.

Beakers

Test Tube

Some pieces of glassware are designed as containers for materials used in laboratory experiments. Beakers, Erlenmeyer flasks and test tubes are pieces of glassware designed for such use. They are not measuring devices. The volumes marked on these pieces of glassware are to give an estimate of the volumes that can be held by these containers.

Erlenmeyer Flasks

Volumetric Glassware: Other pieces of glassware are devices for measuring volumes. Graduated cylinders, volumetric flasks, pipets and burets are used when quantitative information is needed.

Buret

Graduated Cylinder

When recording the volume for a buret or a graduated cylinder, record all digits that can be read from the scale and one estimated digit.

Pipet and Volumetric Flask

Each volumetric flask and pipet is designed to measure one volume. That volume is marked on the flask or pipet. These volumes are considered good to two decimal places. For example, a 10 mL pipet delivers 10.00 mL when used correctly.

Stirring rod and a filter

Stirring rods may be plastic or glass. If a glass stirring rod is used, it is important that both ends be smooth and well polished.

Watch glasses are useful for weighing out solid materials. They are NOT made of pyrex and CANNOT be heated.

Evaporating dishes are made of porcelain and can be used to heat materials over a flame or hot plate.
