Chemistry 121

This is the first chemistry course for all students taking chemistry. A recent course in high school chemistry is not required, although it will make the course easier. A familiarity with algebra equivalent to the completion of Math 106, placement level 20 or higher on the math placement exam, or a Math ACT score of 24 or higher is required. For students planning to take Chemistry 122, level 20 math (Math 131 or 144 (Chemistry majors)) must be taken concurrently with Chemistry 121 if needed. The text for fall 2007 will be Brady & Senese, Chemistry: Matter and Its Changes, fourth edition. Chemistry 123, the laboratory, must be taken the same semester as Chemistry 121.

Chemistry 122

This is the second chemistry course for all students taking chemistry. A C in both Chemistry 121 and 123 is required before taking Chemistry 122. This course uses the same text as 121 and requires Chemistry 124, the laboratory, to be taken the same semester. The successful completion of Math level 20 (Math 131 or 144), a Math ACT of 26 or higher, or a placement test score of 30 or greater is a prerequisite. Chemistry 122 is usually a more difficult course for students than 121 and will require more study time from the very beginning. Most students do not have a knowledge of this material from high school.

Chemistry 123

This is the laboratory course to be taken at the same time as Chemistry 121. This course teaches the basic laboratory skills needed for future laboratory courses and supplements the lecture. The text to be used in 2007-08 is the Laboratory Manual for General Chemistry, 5th edition, by Grant and Meyer.

Chemistry 124

This is the laboratory course to be taken at the same time as Chemistry 122. The experiments complement the lecture and further develop laboratory skills. The text to be used in 2007-08 is the Laboratory Manual for General Chemistry, 5th edition, by Grant and Meyer.

Chemistry 286

This is the public speaking course required of all chemistry majors. This is a participation class where class attendance is a must! Students give at least 4 talks per semester, participate in a poster session, and perfect their use of PowerPoint and ISISDraw to prepare presentations. All talks are recorded for self-assessment.
