There are research opprotunities for students to conduct experiments on a number of related projects within the laboratory.

The lab is currently conducting research on a mutation, called dead elvis, as well as characterizing zebrafish orthologs of mammalian skeletal genes.

RESEARCH INTERESTS

Somatogenesis and its role in the formation of muscle and vertebral column during zebrafish embryogenesis.

RESEARCH TECHNIQUES

Embryology, Molecular Biology, Genetics,

Genomics, Comparative Anatomy

The zebrafish is a leading model for studies of vertebrate developmental biology. They have many advantages as a model organism.

1) Small size and easy of maintenance.

2) Large numbers of offspring.

3) Ease in manipulating and studying zebrafish embryos. The embryos are basically transparent, and do not require much manipulation to view them.

4) Genetics are well advanced, with a number of genetic maps, and the sequencing of the genome has produced a wealth of primary data.

I have used mice as model organisms and plan to utilize them again in the future.
