Chem 372 Lab
Spring 2004

Objectives
To perform experiments designed to enhance your knowledge of quantum theory, spectroscopy, kinetics, and properties of matter. To continue the development of laboratory skills expected of professional chemists and engineers.

Lab Texts
Experiments in Physical Chemistry, 7th Ed., , Garland, Nibler, and Shoemaker, McGraw-Hill, 2003

Experiments in Physical Chemistry II, Kutz and Rybolt, 2004

Notebook
A bound laboratory notebook (National Brand Laboratory Research Notebook 43-645) is required. All information is to be recorded directly in this notebook. No scrap paper is to be used. No white pages are to be removed. The yellow pages are to be turned in at the end of each laboratory period. (You are welcome to use the remaining portion of your Chem 371 Lab notebook.)

Safety
You are expected to learn and follow all safety regulations. You must wear goggles in the laboratory at all times.

Reference
The following folder has been placed in the Grote Library (under the unabridged dictionary): Instructions for the Adiabatic Calorimeter.

Office Hours
Grote 404A: MWF 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. and by appointment.

Lockers
Each experiment is to be performed using equipment in the designated locker. Please return equipment to the locker. Do not use equipment from other lockers.

Honesty
You are expected to follow the UTC Honor Code rigorously. You are encouraged to discuss the experiments with others, but the work you turn in must represent your own efforts exclusively. Submitting material you have copied constitutes cheating.

Attendance
You are expected to attend all laboratory sessions and to arrive on time (we follow Naval Observatory Time). You will be penalized if you arrive late. If you miss a laboratory, speak with me upon returning to classes. You will be directed to make up work that is missed for a legitimate reason. Only one make up will be permitted. A grade of zero will be assigned for work that is missed for an unacceptable reason. If an experiment is scheduled for two weeks, you must devote the entire first week to performing the experiment.

Activities
This semester you will perform seven experiments, one of which is a Special Topics activity. You will write three major lab reports and three mini lab reports. You will also give both an oral presentation and a written report on the special topics activity.

Deadlines
Lab reports are due at the beginning of the period the day specified in the schedule. Late reports will receive a 50% penalty. Reports that are more than one week late will not be accepted.

ADA
If you have a disability requiring assistance, please speak with me. You are also invited to contact the College Access Program office in Frist Hall.

Lab Grade
The lab grade constitutes 25% of the 372 course grade. The lab grade is based on the following:
three major lab reports @ 15 pts 45 pts
three mini lab reports @ 10 pts 30 pts
one special topics activity @ 25 pts 25 pts
